A Foggy Evening at Stumpy Lake in Virginia Beach

As I drove home from Norfolk one afternoon, I notice that Stumpy Lake in Virginia Beach was covered with a blanket of fog.  The fog was low, seeping out through the trees along the side of Indian River Road.  I didn't know what to expect when I turned down the causeway, but I was rewarded with a magical scene before me.

The lake was quiet and the parking lot was mostly empty.  A lone stand up paddle boarder considering going in for a paddle, but decided against it as he evaluated the partially frozen lake.  There were only a few other people who had stopped on the way home to appreciate the beauty of the afternoon.  Mostly, though, the lake was quiet.  Even the birds seemed to be hypnotized by the fog.

After shooting for a few minutes alone, I called a friend to tell her she had to come join me.  This view was just too spectacular not to share.  I made a new friend, an amazing night photographer that I've been following on Instagram for quite some time.  Together, the three of us walked up and down the causeway, each appreciating the magic of Stumpy Lake in our own way.

In the end, it was an extraordinary evening, filled with quiet beauty, shooting with friends, and simply appreciating the magic of winter.
