Falling in Love with the Lensbaby Velvet
I’ll admit that I purchased the Lensbaby Velvet 56 on a bit of a whim. Thinking a new lens would inspire me but instead it sat unused for a while. One day when planning to visit the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, I decided that I would only bring the Velvet and I’d experiment with all the lens was capable of. I instantly fell in love with the versatility of the lens and knew it would replace my long neglected macro lens.
Tips for Mastering the Lensbaby Velvet Glow
If you are new to shooting with a Velvet lens, the learning curve can feel a bit steep. Here are a few practical tips to help you get the most out of its unique artistic look:
Control the Glow with Aperture: Shooting wide open at f/1.6 or f/2 gives you that intense, ethereal, impressionistic blur. If you want a sharper image with just a subtle, velvety skin tone or highlight glow, step down to f/4 or f/5.6.
Mastering Manual Focus: Because of the soft glow, your camera's focus peaking can sometimes get tripped up. Try using your camera monitor's zoom magnification feature to lock focus precisely on your subject before clicking the shutter.
Composition Strategy: Place your primary point of interest near the center of the frame where the optic is inherently sharpest, allowing the beautiful, velvety blur to naturally stretch out toward the edges.
