A Winter Walk at Yorktown Beach

In the typical spirit of Hampton Roads, in the past week we've had rain, snow, blustery wind, and 60 degree temperatures.  When the forecast called for a warm, sunny day, I grabbed a photography buddy and set out for Yorktown Beach.  We spent the day walking, talking and stopping along the way as something caught our eyes.

As we walked along the shoreline, we were startled to find a tree full of Cedar Waxwings.  Both of us are bird lovers and we quickly rushed to get out of 70-200 lenses.  The birds were gleefully distracted by the berries on the tree and really paid no mind to us as we watched in awe.

A local pointed us in the direction of the Eagle and we headed up the hill.  Along the way, we noticed another Eagle sitting out on a pilling in the water, just watching and waiting.

As we rounded the hill towards the other Eagle, we were startled to find him so close!  We each snapped just a couple of photographs before he spotted us and flew off.

The top of the hill touched the Yorktown Battlefield and had a beautiful ivy covered wall.

We started back down to the waterfront, making our way slowly over the remaining patches of snow and ice.

As we approached, we scared off a flock of blackbirds hiding beyond the dunes.

After lunch, we continued along the waterfront, watching the Coast Guard boats shuffle in and out of the marine.  A team from the Virginia Living Museum set out on Lady Luck with nets and buckets.

From the Yorktown Beach fishing dock, we watched as the mid day sun created diamonds on the water.
