Beating the Storm for a Beautiful Grand Canyon Sunrise

After arriving at the Grand Canyon just in time for a fantastic sunset, I was happy to have gotten in a little photography.  As a photographer, I know that conditions aren't guaranteed and patience and repetition are a huge factor in having a successful photo shoot.  So when you only have an opportunity for one sunset and one sunrise, you hold you breath hoping a least something is successful, but never expecting both.  We had been watching a winter storm that was heading straight towards the Grand Canyon and we knew we had to hit the road before the weather turned bad.  Fortunately when we woke for the sunrise, the bad weather had been delayed a few hours and the sky out the window looked promising.  With our limited time, we decided to hike along the rim, stretching our legs for a few miles before climbing back into the moving truck.  I chose viewpoints along the way to stop and create photographs, admiring the way the intermittent clouds and sunshine painted the rocks and sky in varying shades.  In one moment the sky would be bright pink and the rock would be a brilliant orange, and in another the clouds would be grey and drab while the rock looked blue and cool.  It made for challenging white balance and consistency from a photography standpoint, but I did my best to stay true to what we were seeing through the morning.
