It snowed! Kind of.
We usually get a couple of snow days here in Hampton Roads. It's been a while since we've had a huge snowstorm, though. We got just enough a couple of weekends ago to wreck havoc on the already wet roads which quickly turned to snow covered black ice. Our neighborhood is off a two lane stretch of road with particularly deep ditches and sharp turns; never a good combination with black ice. We spent most of the day home during the snow, until the sun rose high in the sky and melted it away.
Snow is so pretty as it's falling, creating a soft blanket that makes everything seem so soft and delicate. And it certainly doesn't keep the birds off of our feeder. If anything, it makes them a little more beautiful than usual. This woodpecker kept his perch under the roof of the feeder for what seemed like hours during the snow, while the finches flicked back and forth between the woods and the feeder.
After the snow fall ended, I was drawn to the late late afternoon setting sun as it filtered through the trees. The snow barely covered our grass, revealing a frozen pond at the bottom of the hill. The sunlight made the last of the leaves remaining on the trees sparkle and glitter. What only a few hours before looked like a blah grey mess of trees was now a beautiful forest.
And I couldn't help but step back and catch the sun filtering through the windows. The sunroom has always been my favorite part of my home, but never more so than when the light is streaming in.
