Summer Evenings on Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Every day the world is teaching me what I need to know to be in the world.

Sometimes the pull to pick up my camera is so great, that I feel guided by some unknown thing. Despite the heat, the to do list, the dinner that begs to be made, I just have to go take photographs. This was one of those evenings. Life was swirling all around and connecting with creativity was the only thing that would ground me.

I decided to wander down a path I’d never followed before. It was muggy and buggy but the light started to change from that blah summer sun to golden magic light. The insects were too busy dancing in the light to even pay attention to me. The only sounds were the buzzing of their wings and the croaking of the frogs hidden under cover.

Everything looked magical in the golden light. The tips of grasses were transformed into pieces of art as they were kissed by the rays of the sun. I wished that I could take the grass home and dry it for display, but I knew much of the beauty was caused by the light.

The marsh waters were still, except for the invisible kick of the geeze, dipping and diving into the water below. I realized how truly small my presence was in comparison to my surroundings.

Perhaps it isn’t the camera that was calling to me and instead it was Mother Nature, pulling me towards her to hug me tight.
