Chasing Atmosphere and Light in Sedona

The sheer scale of the Sedona landscape is humbling. From the iconic towers of Cathedral Rock to the layered ridges stretching toward the horizon, the geology here demands that you slow down. I spent so much time watching the light hit the peaks, turning the deep iron-reds into brilliant oranges that seemed to vibrate against the pale blue sky.

What struck me most was how the light interacts with the atmosphere here. The desert light is crisp and directional, a sharp contrast to more muted climates. Chasing the sun as it dipped behind the massive basalt formations allowed for some incredible sunburst moments, particularly through the gnarled, ancient branches of the local juniper trees. It’s a reminder that even in a landscape this vast, the most powerful stories are often found in the intersection of a single tree and the sun.
