For anyone seeking breathtaking high alpine scenery and incredible hiking trails in California, the Eastern Sierra Nevada is a must-visit destination. Our adventure to the Mammoth Lakes area wouldn't have been complete without experiencing the iconic Little Lakes Valley hike to Gem Lakes. This popular trail, located within the magnificent John Muir Wilderness, offers unparalleled beauty and rewarding photographic opportunities.

Our journey began at an elevation above 10,000 feet, which sounds daunting, but the Little Lakes Valley trail boasts very little elevation gain. This allowed us to cover a substantial 7 miles round trip without tremendous effort, making it an ideal high elevation day hike for most fitness levels.

The hike through Little Lakes Valley is a visual feast, winding past a series of stunning alpine lakes before culminating at the truly aptly named Gem Lake. Each lake offers its own unique charm and reflections, providing endless inspiration for landscape photographers.

The rugged, rocky terrain is quintessential High Sierra mountains, with imposing 13,000-foot peaks forming a dramatic backdrop. This environment provides incredible opportunities to capture the raw beauty of California's wilderness.

Photography Tips for Little Lakes Valley & Gem Lakes:

  • Midday Light Strategies (When Golden Hour Isn't Possible): If you can't be at the lakes during early morning or late afternoon, midday light still offers opportunities. On bright sunny days, look for strong contrasts between light and shadow, or use a polarizing filter to reduce glare on the water and deepen the blues. Overcast midday conditions can provide soft, even light, perfect for capturing the subtle textures of the mountains and the vibrant colors of the lakes without harsh shadows.

  • Reflections are Key: Look for calm water surfaces to capture stunning reflections of the peaks and sky. A polarizing filter can be particularly effective here to cut through glare and enhance the reflections.

  • Wide-Angle Wonders: A wide-angle lens is perfect for capturing the vastness of the valley, the expansive lakes, and the towering peaks in a single frame.

  • Composition with Foreground Elements: Use the rocky foreground, patches of wildflowers (in season), or individual trees to add depth and interest to your compositions and lead the viewer's eye into the scene.

  • Patience for Wildlife: Keep an eye out for marmots, pikas, or various bird species – they can make for charming additions to your high alpine shots, adding a sense of scale and life to the landscape.

The experience of traversing this high alpine valley, surrounded by such majestic peaks, is unforgettable. It reminds us why Mammoth Lakes and the entire Eastern Sierra region are a must-see for anyone who calls California home, or who simply loves to explore truly wild and beautiful places.
