Why Lake Ann is The Best Day Hike in the North Cascades

Lake Ann, North Cascades National Park, Washington

Lake Ann is my favorite day hike in the North Cascades. A wandering trail winds alongside a stream through grasses filled with wildflowers before you enter a wooded forest with towering old growth trees. The forest opens up and you start to climb, scrambling over rocky switchbacks before cresting out with a view of the lake below. Mount Shuksan looms large to the left, offering a view of the climbing route if the clouds clear enough.

One of my favorite parts of the trip to Lake Ann is packing a floatie to lounge in the lake. While the water is cold, the experience is well worth the chill.
