Finding Pockets of Quiet: Old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey
Old Fisherman's Wharf is a Monterey icon, so it was a must-see stop on my California coast trip. The wharf itself was exactly what you'd expect—bustling with tourists eating clam chowder and sampling saltwater taffy, seagulls vying for scraps, and a harbor full of fishing boats and sailboats.
But my favorite part wasn't the main drag. It was looking down below to find the smaller boats, all neatly tied up against the dock. There is a beautiful, rhythmic geometry to a quiet marina if you stop long enough to look past the main tourist spots.
Field Notes: Behind the Lens in Monterey
If you want to pull off to wander or photograph the harbor, Old Fisherman's Wharf is located right downtown at 101 Washington Street, with municipal parking lots right next to the marina entrance. While midday brings a lot of foot traffic and harsh reflections off the water, walking the docks during early morning or late afternoon lets you catch a softer, more directional light filling the boat slips.
When you're trying to photograph a busy, iconic tourist destination without your images looking like generic snapshots, it helps to narrow your frame. Instead of trying to capture the entire scene, using manual mode and a longer focal length lets you isolate the interesting details—like the texture of weathered dock lines, the reflections of colorful hulls on calm water, or the graphic lines of the small boats tied below the main walkways.
