The View from Alpine Road: Photography in Silicon Valley
One of the things that surprised us most in our move to California were the hills surrounding Silicon Valley. We knew we’d have reasonable access to the beaches and be closer to the mountains, but we never imagined the incredible natural areas that we’d find just 15 minutes down the road.
This weekend we took a drive down Alpine Road and were gifted to some pretty breathtaking views of the Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve.
Field Notes: Behind the Lens in Silicon Valley
Driving up Alpine Road from the quiet valleys of Portola Valley brings you straight up to the ridgeline where the peninsula meets Skyline Boulevard. The trails winding through the Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve are beautifully open, meaning you get expansive panoramic horizons without heavy tree cover blocking the sky. Late afternoon is an incredible time to explore this stretch; as the sun dips lower, the light catches the dry grasses along the ridges, turning the rolling hills a deep, rich amber. On days when the marine layer is active, you can stand right near the edge of the overlook and watch the coastal fog tumble through the lower gaps in the Santa Cruz Mountains below you. When you are framing up these expansive views, consider switching to a telephoto lens alongside your wide-angle. Compressing those distant, layered ridges against the shifting haze or low fog is a beautiful way to bring a clean, minimalist feel to your landscape composition.
