Finding Your Own Creative Voice through Creative Community

Photography is, by nature, a pretty quiet and solitary practice. Most of our time is spent creating images alone, waiting for the light to hit a specific spot, or sitting by ourselves in front of a screen trying to bring a digital file to life. Because the process is so independent, it is easy to forget how good it feels to create alongside people who truly understand your obsession.

The real heart of gathering at the Saltwater Retreat shows up in the quiet moments between our shooting sessions. The big breakthrough moments rarely happen in a rush. Instead, they come out during those long, lingering conversations over coffee in the morning, or when we are all huddled around the living room TV sharing images from the week, talking through what worked and what didn't without any ego or judgment in the room.

There is a distinct energy that comes from being surrounded by a small group of women who share your exact passion. When we go out into the field, everyone spreads out to explore the location on their own to find a unique perspective. Later, it is incredibly eye-opening to see how someone else looked at the exact same patch of sand dunes and walked away with an entirely different photograph. It creates a safe space where you can ask the lingering questions youโ€™ve been holding onto, and try new techniques without the fear of messing up, because everyone around you is doing the exact same thing.

When you spend days eating together, driving to locations, and chasing the same coastal light, the landscape changes you, but the people are what stay with you.

Photography will always be a solo art form at its core. But every now and then, it is incredibly necessary to step out of that isolated bubble and remember what it feels like to create among friends.

If you are ready to experience this kind of community for yourself, join us on Hatteras Island and letโ€™s grow together.
