Street Photography in Santa Cruz with the Lensbaby Edge
Earlier this summer, I had the opportunity to tag along with Forrest on a trip to Northern California. My first priority was meeting up with a few of my online photography friends in San Jose, and it's amazing how much smaller the world feels now that we have a way to connect so easily.
We all hit the road together toward the coast to spend some time in Santa Cruz. We arrived just in time for lunch and immediately headed out to explore the streets near our hotel. I wanted to focus on capturing the character of the neighborhood, so I spent the afternoon shooting with my Lensbaby Edge, selectively focusing on the unique sights and details around the area.

When you are taking a tilt-shift style optic like the Lensbaby Edge out for street photography, your creative workflow changes completely. Instead of relying on your camera's automatic tracking to catch standard documentary snapshots, the physical slice of focus forces you to slow down and compose with real intention. When shooting near a busy coastal destination like Santa Cruz, the streets can quickly get visually cluttered with traffic, signs, and crowds. I like to tilt the lens body to create a narrow, deliberate plane of sharp focus right across a specific subject—like a vintage storefront detail or a passing shadow—allowing the rest of the busy street background to gently drop off into a smooth, painterly blur. It is a beautiful way to isolate a single story within a chaotic environment and bring a quiet, personal perspective to everyday coastal scenes.
