Catching the Evening Tide: Sunset at Harbor Beach

After spending the afternoon photographing around Santa Cruz, we headed over to the harbor for dinner. We could see the Walton Lighthouse casting its familiar silhouette right from our table in the restaurant and decided it would be the perfect spot to catch the sunset.

Harbor Beach is a small stretch of sand, but it lived up to its name beautifully. We spent the rest of the evening watching the sailboats come and go through the stone jetties as the last of the daylight dipped below the horizon.

Field Notes: Behind the Lens in Santa Cruz

If you want to pull off to watch or photograph the lighthouse at sunset, Seabright Harbor Beach is located right off Atlantic Avenue on the east side of the harbor channel. There is easy parking in a lot not far from the water's edge, giving you a clear view looking west across the entrance where the boats clear the harbor mouth.

When you're tracking moving sailboats against a fading coastal sunset, your primary challenge is managing your shutter speed while maintaining your exposure. I like to use manual mode, setting a fast enough shutter speed to keep the details of the moving sails crisp while opening up my aperture to draw in the deep colors of the sky. Exposing directly for the bright sky right behind the Walton Lighthouse keeps the structure in a clean silhouette and preserves those rich, warm sunset tones across the water.
