Backpacking Goat Rocks Wilderness: Sunsets, Wildflowers, and Volcano Views
Sunrise light hitting the clouds over Mount Adams and a valley filled with inversion fog, viewed from the high ridges of the Goat Rocks Wilderness, Washington.
Until I adventured to the Goat Rocks Wilderness, I thought Yellow Aster Butte was my favorite Washington backpack. While Goat Rocks doesn’t have the alpine lakes we love for swimming (though we found one on the hike out) it does have incredible views, more wildflowers than you can name, and epic sunsets and sunrises.
Walking along the ridges there feels unreal with Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, and Mount St. Helens all looming huge in the distance. The landscape is so open, rugged, and constantly changing with the light, clouds, and weather.
This was one of those nights in the mountains that will live forever, literally burned into our memories.
