Shaped by Smoke: Black and White Perspectives from Slate Peak

Looking down from Slate Peak at a high-altitude ridge road, where the distant mountains disappear into a glowing, monochromatic haze.

The View from Slate Peak, August 2023

On July 26, 2023 a lightning storm moved through the North Cascades, sparking wildfires and leaving chaos in its wake. High temperatures and low humidity in the days that followed, ignited the flanks of Sourdough Mountain, just north of Diablo Lake. The Sourdough fire would burn for 64 days and nearly 6400 acres.

These images taken on August 15th, 2023, capture the smoky haze that hung over the mountains, even on the clearest blue sky day. Processing these in black and white allowed the smoke to become the primary subject, shifting the attention from the mountains themselves to their physical forms.
